Vision

Current surveys among enterprises regarding the key qualifications of graduates show that international practical experience rank on top of all criteria. In contrast to that the curricula with integrated practical placements are rather rare and a quality assessment for transnational placements in enterprises is not existing as it is for study periods abroad. It is difficult to know and check placements in the host enterprise in all regions in the enlarged Europe from the home university of students. To overcome this disadvantage an innovative and completely new model and approach will be implemented in this project. The idea is to implement regional quality reference centres which build the bridge between the host enterprises and the sending institutions and are assessing the quality of placements at hosting enterprises.

It tries to go beyond the present scheme by setting up concrete standards and solid structures for quality assurance in order to provide students, enterprises and universities secured bases for European wide comparable and assessed work placements. That will lead to an improved quality of placements and before long increased numbers of students participating in EU mobility programmes. The project aim is to improve the quality of practical placements in co-operation between the universities and enterprises through creating a network model for quality of transnational student placements in enterprises.

Within this project, a European strategy will be elaborated, including a complete methodology to develop reference centres from scratch at local/regional/ national level ready to be integrated in the European system.

The results of this project could lay the basis of a new level in quality of mobility in European educational programmes and could easily lead to certified placements with a quality standard label for enterprises. They should be transferred to a pan-European initiative to set up Quality Reference Centres in all regions in the EU and eligible countries as regional contact points for quality assurance of placements. The Quality Reference Centres should then build a European Quality Reference Network which certifies the companies where students take a practical placement supported by the Erasmus-Placement programme. Through this European Quality Reference Network a general standard for integrated practical training periods could be developed, even for those placements which are not financially supported by an EU programme.
